E-Waste

New Electronic or “E-Waste” Legislation:

Each year in California hundreds of thousands of computers, monitors, copiers, fax machines, printers, televisions, and other electronic items become "obsolete" in the eyes of consumers. Rapid advances in technology and an expanding demand for new features accelerate the generation of "old" electronic equipment ("e-waste"). The result is a growing challenge for businesses, residents, local governments and the University as we search for ways to reuse, recycle, or properly dispose of this equipment.
At CSUF we dispose of hundreds of obsolete electronic instruments and equipment each year.  Computers and their monitors compose the largest segment of our e-waste.  However any piece of equipment that has an electronic circuit board in it is now subject to the new legislation.  IT equipment, consumer electronics, electrical and electronic tools, electronic toys, leisure and sports equipment, large and small household appliances and lighting equipment  also fall into this category.
We will be working with the state regulatory agencies to further define our responsibilities and options for e-waste disposal on campus.  We will let you know shortly how you can help us maintain our compliance with this new regulation.  In the meantime please do not throw any piece of equipment into the trash.  If you have any questions call Bob Gill (ext.4345) and contact the Property Assets Manager, Terry Jarmon (ext. 2291) for assistance in its disposal.
