Capacity
What is Capacity?
Capacity is also known as campus physical capacity. Capacity space is defined as the following space categories:
- Lecture classrooms
- Teaching laboratories (not research laboratories)
- Offices
Capacity is expressed by number of stations in a room or Full Time Equivalent Students (FTES).
Capacity FTES is calculated by multiplying the total stations in each space category by the appropriate conversion factor based on current utilization standards.

Capacity vs. Enrollment
The terms of “enrollment” and “capacity” are often used as a comparison in determining the need for new space. Enrollment will always have an impact on the capital needs of the campus space requirements. The following chart shows the relationship of campus physical capacity and lecture/ teaching lab enrollment over the years.
